What is the issue ?
- Anthropogenic causes have led to the depletion of the Loktak lake in terms of its purity and environmental condition.
What exactly is happening to the lake ?
- Acidification of the water in the lake is occuring at a slow pace, this will lead to decalcification in future which would turn out to be an ecological disaster from the biodiversity point of view.
- Rising urbanisation, change in the land use pattern have resulted in disturbances ecologically.
What is being done to help protect the lake from further degradation ?
- Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development has launched a unique experimental station, a motorboat that was converted into a data collection centre, to keep an eye on the lake’s health.
